In Her Shoes Silent Auction 2010
How do camels look in high heels? Pretty darn good! Employees and community members showed up in droves to the 2010 spring initiative, In Her Shoes, a benefit hosted by the YWCA of Nashville & Middle Tennessee to raise awareness and funds for the Weaver Domestic Violence Center—the largest domestic violence center in the state.
The inaugural In Her Shoes event raised $25,000 and sold 300 tickets, even though only 250 were posted for sale. Stylish shoes (and handbags) were auctioned and the event served as an opportunity for community members to learn about women and families whose lives have been turned around, thanks to the support and services offered at the YWCA.

YWCA of Nashville and Middle Tennessee is dedicated to eliminating racism, empowering women and promoting peace, justice, freedom and dignity for all.
The YWCA’s mission is to educate, encourage, and break down those barriers that perpetuate racism, violence and hopelessness. Through its domestic violence shelter, the YWCA has helped women and families leave abusive situations and start new lives. Proceeds raised by the event went directly to the YWCA Weaver Domestic Violence Center to help support the costs of mentoring programs, GED education courses, and the families’ living expenses.
Remembrance Day
To honor a few of Nashville’s survivors, Camels with a Cause held a “Remembrance Day” in the office. Paper footprints leading to six different storyboards were placed all around the agency, sharing the stories of women who have started new lives after experiencing domestic violence. We were able to spend the day learning about domestic violence, what the YWCA does to help these families, and how we could get involved with the In Her Shoes event.
